A drive that includes the best of Whidbey Island--water and mountain views, a dramatic bridge, and charming small towns. After enjoying a light breakfast at the Harbour Inn, you're ready to start the Loop.

Starting out in Freeland, you will head south (towards the Clinton ferry) on the island's main highway, 525 towards the charming town of Langely. In town you can browse for antiques and Northwest art, or take a walk along the beach accessible from Seawall Park, and look for resident populations of bald eagles, herons and sea lions. If it's lunchtime, you might stop in at the Village Pizzeria for a quick slice to be enjoyed at their outdoor picnic table.

From Langley, you'll backtrack, pass Freeland and the Harbour Inn, and head north on 525. (525 becomes SR 20 near the Port Townsend ferry turn-off, but you won't even notice, just say on the main road) Two great stops for a picnic, walk, or great views of the Olympic Mountains (when it's clear) are detours west to Fort Casey or Fort Ebey state parks.

As you travel along, you'll pass Greenbank Farm--a great stop for a little shopping, and wine tasting, the Penn Cove Mussel Farm, known internationally for it's fabulous mussels--if it's March, you might be in luck, it's the annual Penn Cove Mussel Festival (held in nearby Coupeville), and the historic little town of Coupeville itself. It's a charming little town, not as busy as Langley, so follow the signs to the Victorian-era town favored by Hollywood directors.

En route towards the north end of the Island, you'll pass through bustling Oak Harbor, home of auto dealers, and Wal-Mart, but there's also a Starbucks in the Wal-Mart parking lot if you need to stop for a caffeine fix. After passing through Oak Harbor, you'll be within miles of Deception Pass, where a spectacular bridge, and now a National Historic Landmark, connects Whidbey to Fidalgo Island, its neighbor to the north. At the bridge you can park, and walk across, or hike down to the beach from the south side of the bridge.

You can now either choose to continue over the bridge, and have lunch at our favorite spot just down the road, the Deception Cafe, or loop around and head back to stop at some of the sights you skipped on the way up.

Head on home the by traveling South until you get to Main Street in Freeland, and the traffic signal at the Shell station. Turn left, and the Harbour Inn is a few doors up on your right.
